2017 Adventure Catalyst Program

Hello Adventure Catalysts,

Congratulations and welcome to our 6th cohort of Adventure Catalysts HERE representing over 30 TEDx Events from 12 countries and 5 continents (know any curators in Australia & Antartica?!) around the world! This year promises to be an incredible workshop as we tackle big questions around impact, engagement with our community, and contemplate the future of TEDx.

Now that we know you’re coming, the final step is to register as soon as possible for TEDxBeaconStreet @ JFK —use the link HERE that contains the special code for adventure catalysts. We’re excited to be partnering with the JFK Presidential Library for our event at the brilliantly designed IM Pei JFK Presidential Library! Also, please join us if you’re in the area next weekend Nov 4 + 5 at the Lincoln School for TEDxYouth@BeaconSt and TEDxBeaconStreet HERE.

Beyond the 500 talks over the last 5 years, a major impact of our program is through our Adventure Model. We’re always excited to host TEDx Organizers from around the world to replicate and build upon this model for amplifying great ideas and setting them into action in our local communities. We’re excited to have 27 Adventure Catalyst Alumni returning again this year!

Please see below for the schedule and important details and reach out on our slack channel, Facebook group page, or HERE with any questions you have. Look forward to seeing you all on Nov 17th!

In Action,

Blake, Chris, Caty, John

What is the “X” Factor?

What does the future of TEDx look like? What is the “X” factor that will redefine the TED model? What are best practices for audience and Speaker curation, engagement, partners, and adventures?

Throughout the weekend, we invite you to contribute your thoughts through:

  • 3-min TEDx Lightning Talks (limited number, sign-up to be announced)
  • Tweet and post your idea using #TEDxBeaconSt
  • Blog using Medium HERE or your favorite platform

We will be capturing your Lightning TED Talks, posts, images, and blogs by aggregating them with the hashtag and combining them with ideas you share at the workshops on both Friday and Sunday.

Contribute your thoughts and leave your mark on a landmark report we’ll be compiling which captures these ideas and best practices to be shared with the entire TED and TEDx Communities!

TEDx Artifacts Showcase

Help us showcase your event as part of our global TEDx Adventure Catalyst Community. Please bring an artifact from your TEDx Event with you on Sat morning at 7:30 to showcase at the JFK Presidential Library on Saturday!

Sweatshirt Design

As part of our 2017 Class of Adventure Catalysts, you’ll be donning an official red Ideas in Action Sweatshirt at our check-in and opening ceremony. This will be your uniform for the weekend that has extraordinary super-powers (like the Green Lantern’s Ring! HERE).

This year our “XO” theme stands for more than just love 🙂 It represents how much we value our audience in addition to our speakers and the powerful community we’re bringing together around impactful ideas. It is through this community that we’re able to elevate these ideas through a platform where they can be heard and set into action around the world.

Reserve your hotel HERE. HiBoston is the host hotel for Adventure Catalysts and only has a few beds left. We also added a few additional options.

Join Us on Slack!

The Engine will give us access to their space and engage us on their strategy. Which of these challenges present the biggest opportunity for tech innovation and similarly, which of these technologies being developed present the largest potential be become the largest companies (or even new industries!) over time?

As TEDx organizers, we know that our audience is just as important as our Speakers in elevating great ideas. How might we bring a community voice to our events? What are some actionable strategies that can be deployed in order to achieve it? Join Steve Rothstein (Speaker ’16 HERE) as we explore the IM Pei designed JFK Presidential Library and the inspiration behind each of the spaces for our event on Saturday: Smith Hall, simulcast space, demo spaces, and the Presidential Library Exhibits.

Behind the Scenes Adventure
Fenway Park, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, MA 02215

As TEDx Organizers, we’re often called on to quantify our impact when pitching our event or approaching prospective sponsors. It’s difficult, right? How exactly do you quantify the human impact of an idea that’s spread through our platforms? Dave Friedman (Speaker ’15 HERE) struggles with this same question as the head lawyer for the Boston Red Sox and Red Sox Foundation which is the largest team charity in pro sports. Join us for a behind the scenes look at operations of one of the most respected and celebrated pro sports teams in the nation.

Service Impact Adventure
Cradles to Crayons, 155 N Beacon St, Brighton, MA 02135

Just as we’ll hear and experience with November Project on Friday, starting a movement is hard and starting one within non-profit, socially-driven organizations is even harder! Lynn Margherio (Speaker 17 HERE) started Cradles to Crayons HERE when she recognized a need and was driven by a much larger purpose to affect meaningful social change in the Boston Community. The organization now partners with 304 agencies and is powered by 50k volunteers serving 3 metropolitan communities. How is a movement of this magnitude started and scaled and what enables it to thrive?

—Full Schedule—

Sun, Nov 19th, 1:00-3:30pm
Impact X Workshop + TED Presentation
Horticulture Hall, 300 Massachusetts Ave, Boston, MA 02115

Impact. What does it mean? How is it achieved? And how is it measured? How can we create meaningful impact through our events and what can we take from Bojan, Brogan, Lynn and others in scaling our impact to orders of magnitude beyond our own events and communities? How can we quantify the human impact of our events and what can we leverage from Dave Friedman and others?

Finally, how might we use the moonshot (or even planetary!) mindset of Vlad and others to reimagine what the future of TED looks like? What is this “X” factor that will redefine TED? What are best practices for audience and Speaker curation, engagement, partners, and adventures?

Contribute your thoughts and leave your mark on a landmark report we’ll be compiling which captures these ideas and best practices to be shared with the entire TED and TEDx Communities!
