SCHEDULE  |  CLASS ’18  |  X-FACTOR  |  ARTIFACTS  |  DIRECTIONS  |  SLACK

Hello Adventure Catalysts,

Congratulations and welcome to our 7th cohort of Adventure Catalysts HERE representing over 25 TEDx Events spanning 3 continents HERE! This year promises to be an incredible workshop as we tackle big questions around impact, engagement with our community, and contemplate the future of TEDx.

Now that we know you’re coming, the final step is to register as soon as possible for TEDxBeaconStreet @ JFK—use the link HERE that contains the special code for adventure catalysts. We’re excited to be partnering with the JFK Presidential Library for our event at the brilliantly designed IM Pei JFK Presidential Library! Also, please join us if you’re in the area next weekend Nov 10 at the Lincoln School for TEDxYouth@BeaconSt and TEDxBeaconStreet HERE.

  • Speakers at our TEDxYouth Event Nov 10 HERE
  • Speakers at our Nov 17 Event @ JFK HERE

Beyond the 800 talks over the last 6 years, a major impact of our program is through our Adventure Model. We’re always excited to host TEDx Organizers from around the world to replicate and build upon this model for amplifying great ideas and setting them into action in our local communities.

This year we’re also excited to host Will and the TEDx Team to run a session at the workshop on Friday–see below.

Please see below for the schedule and important details and reach out on our slack channel HERE or email HERE with any questions you have. Look forward to seeing you all on Nov 16th!

In Action,

John, Blake, Chris and the
Adventure Catalyst Team

Meet the Class of 2018

What is the “X” Factor?

What does the future of TEDx look like? What is the “X” factor that will redefine the TED model? What are best practices for audience and Speaker curation, engagement, partners, and adventures?

Throughout the weekend, we invite you to contribute your thoughts through:

  • 3-min TEDx Lightning Talks (limited number, sign-up to be announced)
  • Tweet and post your idea using #TEDxBeaconStreet
  • Blog using Medium HERE or your favorite platform

We will be capturing your Lightning TED Talks, posts, images, and blogs by aggregating them with the hashtag and combining them with ideas you share at the workshops on both Friday and Sunday.

Contribute your thoughts and leave your mark on a landmark report we’ll be compiling which captures these ideas and best practices to be shared with the entire TED and TEDx Communities!

TEDx Artifacts Showcase

Help us showcase your event as part of our global TEDx Adventure Catalyst Community. Please bring an artifact from your TEDx Event with you on Sat morning at 7:45 to showcase at the JFK Presidential Library on Saturday!

Join Us on Slack!

Thank you to everyone’s feedback from last year on having a better way for communicating, especially during the event. You can join the conversation on our AC slack channel HERE.

Fri, Nov 16th, 8:30-9:30am
Breakfast Kickoff @ Google
Google Cambridge, 355 Main St, Cambridge, MA 02142

The mission of Google is to organize the world’s information and to make it universally accessible and useful. TEDx is similarly on a mission to find and organize ideas worth spreading. How can we take this thinking to the next level to not only elevate the best ideas but also set them into action in our communities through adventures where they will spark deeper learning, conversation and have a meaningful impact? Join us for breakfast along with a special guest to help us kick off the day.

—Full Schedule—

Fri, Nov 16th, 10:30-11:30pm
Behind the Scenes Adventure
Fenway Park, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, MA 02215

As TEDx Organizers, we’re often called on to quantify our impact when pitching our event or approaching prospective sponsors. It’s difficult, right? How exactly do you quantify the human impact of an idea that’s spread through our platforms? Dave Friedman (Speaker ’15 HERE) struggles with this same question as the head lawyer for the Boston Red Sox and Red Sox Foundation which is the largest team charity in pro sports. Join us for a behind the scenes look at operations of one of the most respected and celebrated pro sports teams in the nation.

—Full Schedule—

Fri, Nov 16th, 12:00-5:30pm
Impact X Workshop + TED Presentation
Horticulture Hall, 300 Massachusetts Ave, Boston, MA 02115

We’ll provide a working lunch. Let us know if you have any dietary restrictions.

Impact. What does it mean? How is it achieved? And how is it measured? How can we create meaningful impact through our events and what can we take from others in scaling our impact to orders of magnitude beyond our own events and communities? How can we quantify the human impact of our events?

Finally, how might we use the moonshot (or even planetary!) mindset of others to reimagine what the future of TED looks like? What is this “X” factor that will redefine TED? What are best practices for audience and Speaker curation, engagement, partners, and adventures?

Contribute your thoughts and leave your mark on a landmark report we’ll be compiling which captures these ideas and best practices to be shared with the entire TED and TEDx Communities!

Dinner will be on your own. You’ll have the opportunity to break off into small groups and hit the fine dining options around Symphony Hall.

How did Boston’s 3rd Horticultural Hall go from being filled with thousands of amaryllises, gloxinias and orchids in the early 1900s to housing one of the country’s most distinguished music schools? Come celebrate the cap to our day of adventures and idea sharing with some of our TEDxBeaconStreet Speakers in one of the architectural gems of Boston.

We’ll order pizzas and you’re welcome to bring your own beer.

Join us as we meet one of the top neurosurgeons and get a behind-the-scenes experience at MIT. Explore new tools to map the activity and spatial organization of neurons in the brain, with the goal of understanding how the brain changes over development and during disease. In the future, will we all have tiny holes in our skulls to allow probes to study the circuitry of our neural systems? This and other surprising visions arise from Sam Rodriques’ dissatisfiaction with the limitations of current neuroscience. See his talk HERE.

—Full Schedule—

Sun, Nov 18th, 3:00-3:30pm
Adventure: Mass General Hospital
Tosteson Medical Education Center, 260 Longwood Ave, Boston, MA 02115

Explore MGH’s important contributions to the medical field, learning about innovations in surgical innovation and artificial intelligence. What if there was a way to make surgery safer, cheaper, and more accessible? Dr. Daniel Hashimoto, a surgeon at Mass General Hospital believes that artificial intelligence is the answer. Most of the data we use in surgery is based on insurance claims data or patient registries. These datasets can describe an operation but not the specifics of what happened in it. New methods in artificial intelligence now help us tap into video-based data to better understand and prevent complications in surgery.

See Dr Hashimoto’s talks HERE.
