IdeaPaint In Action
If you’ve been following our blog, you know about IdeaPaint. Another proponent of “Ideas in Action,” their product transforms any flat surface into an erasable marker board. They also helped illustrate our concept of ‘Ideas in Action’ in our video intro:
We interviewed Karen Knight Detering of Ideas Take Shape, who provided live graphic facilitation during our conference in November. Here, she talks about the serendipity of connecting with TEDxBeaconStreet over our common philosophy of ideas in action.
What is Ideas Take Shape? Ideas Take Shape is a graphic facilitation consultancy providing services to individuals and organizations throughout MetroWest Boston and beyond.
How does the philosophy of Ideas Take Shape connect with the principles behind TEDxBeaconStreet? TEDxBeaconStreet’s commitment to seek out the most interesting people on earth and let them communicate what they are passionate about, untainted by corporate influence, inspires me. In the same way Ideas Take Shape strives to harness the retention and understanding of verbal communication through visual images and text.
Can you tell us about your design background? I have been a graphic recorder and graphic facilitator for thirteen years, and have effectively been using visual communication to develop ideas and concepts for more that twenty-three years. Initially trained as an Interior Designer, I coupled my skill set with a passion for education and training. I returned to school and gained a postgraduate in Art & Design Education. Soon after graduating, I moved to Africa to work at the Botswana College of Education lecturing in Design Education. I followed my work in Africa with a volunteer assignment in the West Indies. In 2005 I founded Ideas Take Shape, a graphic facilitation company that combines my experience and formal training to provide clients with creative ways to communicate their ideas and concepts.
The video and graphics for the TEDx intro were created by Idea Paint; the graphics that I developed during the event (featured in the video) were spontaneously created as I listened to the talks. The images and text capture the essence of the individual talks.
